Dhyani Ywahoo is lineage keeper for the Etowah Band of the Eastern Tsalagi (Cherokee) tradition. In the introduction to her book, Voices of our Ancestors , (Shambala, 1987) Dhyani says "our creation stories & philosophy refer to our sacred duty to instill light, to manifest good for the benefit of all beings.
    "We trace our origins to the stars known as the Pleiades, the Seven Dancers.  Encoded within our ceremonies & patterns of relationship is the Fire of Wisdom, hence we are the firekeepers of the sacred light, responsible for rekindling the fire of clear mind & right relationship in these changing times." (p 1)
    I am of Celtic & Tsalagi descent, & like Dhyani, am of the fifth generation from the Trail of Tears, hence part of the group "given special duties by their elders to rekindle the sacred wisdom fire in all people, so the hoop of life could be renewed." (pp 1 & 5)  The medicine tradition kept by Dhyani's family "is the tradition of the Tsalagi people, traced back through the times of the sun temples.  So we consider ourselves a very ancient people; our history speaks of over a hundred thousand years of relationship to the planet Earth." (p 3)

    Like many of Celtic & Tsalagi lineage, my ancestors included medicine people: preachers, teachers, healers & herb women. ' Medicine' means 'to make whole, to bring into balance.'  I find harmony between sacred traditions, like my Celtic, Christian, & Tsalagi ancestors, I honor a loving, compassionate & wise "Creator Being" which wishes each of us to bring forth our gifts, & shine with our own divinity.
    I align with the ancient Jewish & Christian tradition of 'Original Blessing' or creation centered spirituality, feeling that "like any parent, God loves her creation & that love which is an unconditional sending forth into existence is blessing.  God's creation is desireable; that means it is a blessing." (p 44, Original Blessing, Matthew Fox, 1983)  The later overlay of a doctrine of 'Original Sin' by the council of Trent & Augustine, has hampered many good people who have been frightened out of our birthright of divinity!

    It is time to embrace the earlier sacred traditions which remind us that we all carry Divinity within our very being, & which encourage each of us to find & fine tune our Spiritual gifts, for the betterment of self & of all the Earth!  It is time to rekindle our Sacred Flames, & "honor & respect the sacred gift of life, manifest the wisdom of compassion, & cultivate active intelligece to build instruments of peace. . . Life is a precious gift to be shared." (Voices, p 113)
